Clerks

Clerks (1994), written and directed by Kevin Smith, is a black-and-white indie comedy that captures a single chaotic day in the lives of two convenience store employees. Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) is called in to work on his day off at the Quick Stop, where he spends the day dealing with annoying customers, relationship drama, and an existential crisis about his dead-end job. Next door, his best friend Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson), who works at the video store, spends most of his time antagonizing customers and distracting Dante with his crude humor and cynical outlook. Over the course of the day, the two debate love, life, and pop culture—especially Star Wars—while slacker duo Jay and Silent Bob loiter outside. A raw, hilarious, and surprisingly thoughtful slice of ‘90s life, Clerks became a cult classic that launched Kevin Smith’s career and his interconnected “View Askewniverse.”
